Success Story: Brochoscopic closure of bronchopleural fistula

The Department of Respiratory Medicine of Yenepoya Medical College Hospital, Deralakatte performed a successful Brochoscopic closure of bronchopleural fistula. Usually, patients with ruptured lungs wait for the puncture (fistula) in the lungs to heal on its own, which could take months together. In addition, it is inconvenient and distressing for the patient who would have to have a tube in his chest for the whole period. Because of their poor lung condition they may not withstand the open surgical closure of the hole in the lung. Team of doctors which include  Dr. B. S Verma, Dr. Deepak, , Dr. Irfan, Dr. Deepu Changappa and Dr. Mahshan K M have successfully been able to accomplish the closure of the hole by using a Video Bronchoscope  through the mouth and inserting a special glue. This procedure has been performed for the first time in  Dakshina Kannada.
