Use antibiotics wisely

Today about ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE;
It’s an emerging issue which will pose the most serious threat to all of us as many bacteria are rapidly becoming resistant to many antibiotics.
The main reason is frequent use of antibiotics without proper indication.

A few examples of non judicious use are:
1: Presumed UTI when only clue is a few leukocytes in urine. Please Think !!!
2: Sore throat or upper respiratory infection which is often viral. Please Think !!!.
3: Diarrhea which may be food poisoning or viral or non infectious. Please Think !!!!

What should be done:
1: We should use antibiotics wisely and judiciously, only and only when it’s absolutely necessary.
2: Ideally we should know the microorganism by culture and sensitivity if and when available.
When it’s not available or not possible, then chose antibiotics based on the likely bacterium involved.
3: There should be restrictions on prescribing antibiotics.
4: Local protocols should be established based on prevalence and resistance pattern. Then these should be followed.
Western protocols often don’t apply to developing countries.
